INTRODUCTION
KIRI – Is a Kikuyu name meaning “where there is.” MARA – Is a Kikuyu name referring to the glacier at the top of the mountain. Kikuyu is the native language of this Central part of Kenya. Therefore, Kirimara means where there are beautiful shiny features. This local reference was given by locals living on the southern side, now known as Nyeri district. The original British settler who planted the coffee bushes facing the glacier off the peak Batian of Mount Kenya, adopted this name. |
